FAQs: AGE GROUP CHANGES IN TRAVEL SOCCER

Club Soccer FAQs: Understanding the New Cutoff Date Changes

What age group does my player tryout for?

Players should try out for the age group their date of birth properly assigns them to. We understand this change in structure means players will be shifted from the current group of players and coaches they have been working with.

WHY IS THIS CHANGE HAPPENING?

US Soccer cites the primary reasons include reducing trapped players, aligning soccer with the academic calendar, reverting to the pre‑2017 system, and responding to feedback from families, clubs, and leagues. With the goals to be allowing more team assignments for players and a better social interaction amongst teams, we support US Soccer's decision and believe these changes are for the best.

DOES MY PLAYER HAVE TO REPEAT THEIR CURRENT AGE GROUP?

Yes, a lot of players are in a position where they have to play the same age group they played from the previous fall/spring. Decisions for players to play up will be made by ENCO coaches based on player skill level, and number of players trying out for each team per age group

Does this mean no playing down?

Correct—players cannot play down into a younger age group. Play‑up requests may still be evaluated case‑by‑case.

SHOULD I BE CONCERNED ABOUT THESE CHANGES? ARE THESE NEW GUIDELINES A GOOD THING?

At ENCO, we want to reassure our families regarding the updated age group cutoff dates. US Soccer has implemented these changes to prioritize the long-term development of every player. We view this transition as a positive step; it minimizes 'trapped' players and creates a more cohesive environment by aligning athletes with their grade-level peers. For these reasons we feel these coming changes should be viewed as a positive change.
